Fostering Excellence in Hospital Governance: Lessons from the Alfaisal HG Index

Attendees: Exclusive to executives, board members, and corporate governance (CG) employees in the healthcare industry in Saudi Arabia.

 

Objective:

This workshop, designed for healthcare industry leaders, will provide hands-on insights into hospital governance through a data-driven approach. Using findings from the Hospital Governance Index (HGI) developed by Alfaisal University and case studies of top hospitals in Saudi Arabia, the program will explore best practices for aligning governance with the mission and values of healthcare institutions. Participants will learn from leading scholars and top experts about how good governance can maximize well-being, integrate purpose with profit, and promote transparency and accountability in hospitals.

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM: Opening Remarks & Introduction

  • Speaker: Dr. Necati Aydin, Director of the Corporate Governance Center, College of Business, Alfaisal University
  • Topic: The Importance of Good Governance in the Healthcare Sector
    Dr. Aydin will introduce the workshop objectives, focusing on the vital role of governance in maximizing hospital effectiveness and well-being. The session will also provide an overview of the Hospital Governance Index (HGI) and its relevance for Saudi Arabian healthcare institutions.

  • Speaker: Prof. Oliver Hart, 2016 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Harvard University
  • Topic: "Healthcare Wellbeing Maximization through Good Governance"
    Prof. Hart will explore how hospitals can integrate well-being considerations into their governance frameworks. This session will point some case studies to demonstrate how governance structures can support better outcomes for patients, staff, and stakeholders.

  • Topic: "AI in Sciences and Healthcare Services and Its Implications for Governance: A New Frontier"
  • This session will delve into the transformative role of artificial intelligence in sciences in general and healthcare services in particular. He will explore cutting-edge applications of AI in enhancing decision-making, improving patient care, and optimizing resource allocation. A key highlight of his talk will address the provocative question: Could we one day see AI as board members in governance structures? Drawing on his expertise in AI for capital markets, speakers will discuss the ethical, practical, and technological implications of integrating AI into leadership roles, offering insights into the future of healthcare governance.

  • Speaker: Prof. Alex Edmans, Author of Grow the Pie, London Business School
  • Topic: "Grow the Pie – How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit"
    Prof. Edmans will explore how healthcare organizations can deliver both purpose and profit through strong governance. Using insights from his book Grow the Pie, he will demonstrate how hospitals can balance financial sustainability with patient well-being and broader social impact.

 

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Panel Discussion-1 – "Findings of the HGI Study: Lessons from the Case Study of King Faisal Specialist Hospital (KFSH)"

  • Topic: "Hospital Governance Index by Alfaisal University CG Center: Methodology and Findings"
    Dr. Aydin will present the methodology behind the Hospital Governance Index (HGI) developed by Alfaisal University. This session will focus on the data-driven insights gained from assessing governance practices in Saudi Arabian hospitals, highlighting key areas for improvement and best practices already in place.
